Making a TV pilot
There was a time when content creation was all the rage, and to some extent, I suppose it still is.
But there was a fire in my belly to be seen as a series regular back in 2020…when a pandemic forced us to come up with ways to use our creative energies.
I teamed up with Mike B. to create the original series Hitbaby. Mike had an idea, and talked to me excitedly about an action comedy involving a hitman training a computer nerd. “Come on over Ash, let’s film it”.
With only a skeleton framework in place (literally just the longline) we improv’ed a scene of 2 characters—Mike playing the computer nerd and myself playing the hitman. We originally called it Hitboy. After filming the initial 2 minute sketch, we decided it was worth it to flesh out all the characters and the story into a 30 page tv series.
Just as we were at the finish line, I got an exciting call from my agent that I’d just booked a movie called Slayers, and I would be leaving to New Mexico for a month to film.
It was on that film set that I met Abigail Breslin. We became quick friends, and the time I spent with her made me realize that she was a true comedic genius. She had not directed before, but I knew she would be the perfect director for Hitbaby. So I sent her the script while we were still filming ‘Slayers’, and she got back to me within an hour saying that she’d love to direct it.
Fast forward a month later, she arrived on set and we started production.
I would say one of Abbie’s favorite moments was directing her brother Spencer Breslin in an action sequence with me, seen below.
